Basic Information
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park became a national park on August 1, 1916. The park encompasses 230,000 acres of land, and is located on the big island of Hawaii. More specifically, it is located 96 miles from the city of Kailua-Kona, and 30 miles from the city of Hilo. The park also has received a total of 1,502,855 recreational visits, in its time being a national park.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is showcased for it massive volcanoes, that ultimately made up the Hawaiian islands. The park is home to the worlds most massive volcano, Mauna Loa, at 13,677 feet. Mauna Loa even exceeds Mt.Everest in height. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park also houses the worlds most active volcano, Kilauea. The name Kilauea actually means "spreading, much spewing", describing the volcano. Lava flows from the Kilauea volcano so much, that since it began erupting on January 3, 1983, it has added 500 new acres have been added to the island of Hawaii. |
