Activities & Recreation
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park offers many other activities, rather than hiking on the parks 150 miles of trails, and viewing the parks landscape. Other things to do include going to the Thomas A. Jaggar museum, or attending the Kilauea Cultural Festival in Hawaii. Both these attractions are within the park.
The Thomas A. Jaggar museum is essentially a museum on volcanology, open year round, with Earth science displays, and murals depicting Hawaii's native culture. The museum also showcases displays of equipment used by scientists to study the Kilauea and Mauna Loa volcanoes, clothing and gear used by scientists who got up to the lava from the volcanoes, and working seismographs. There are also displays showing the different types of lava from the volcanoes.
The Kilauea Cultural Festival celebrates Hawaii's native culture, with arts, crafts, music, and games. The festival began in 1980, and this year in July will be the 34th annual festival. The festival was created to embrace the spirit of ohana, or family, and since it was created it has done exactly that.
The cultural festival is held on Crater Rim drive, located in the park, with no fee associated for attending. At Kilauea Cultural Festival you can learn a lot about the culture of Hawaii and its native people, by participating in some of the activities offered. Examples of things you can make include a lei, a coconut basket, Hawaiian quilt, wood fishhook, gourd for hula, or a kukui nut top. Activities you can take part in include playing the ukulele, hawaiian games, learning the Hawaiian language, and tasting foods native to the area.
